Easy Ways to Increase Your Cellphone Battery Life

Share

If you take a daily charge of the phone for granted, it gets annoying when you don't have enough to introduce your phone to it's old friend, the wall charger.
For times when you need to make one last bar of the battery count, learn how to manage your phone's battery life.

Power-Save Mode

An easy (and extremely obvious) way of saving battery, the Power Save mode on most phones, which makes your phone's settings and functions use less power.

3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

You don't need 3G on all the time. Turn it off when you aren't using it - or use GPRS for less power consumption. Ditto for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
This will cut down push email and email refreshes, which also take up more data, and thus your battery power.

Multi-Tasking

Do you really need your Twitter and Facebook app on while you're running in the park with music playing on the headphones? Nope.
For Nokia users with Ovi apps enabled, get App Stop, an app which kills other functioning apps instantly. And its free!
There's also Battery Life Extender, another free Ovi app to extend your stand-by time on your phone by up to 30%.

Turn Down the Brightness

You only need full brightness when you're outdoors. And brightness, if you've ever cranked it all the way up, will eat through battery life. Scale it down to a more economic level to save power.

Cool Battery

Get more talk-time from Lithium Poly Ion (or Li-Poly) batteries, which have 40% more battery capacity than previous versions. However, keep in mind their optimum temperature (usually room temperature) away from hot places. Heat will drain the battery.

Turn it Down

Again, unless you're in a noisy outdoor setting (though even indoor settings can be noisy), turn down your ringtone volume. if you're carrying your phone in your hand, or have it in close proximity, enable a phone profile with a minimal, two beep-type ringtone.

Don't turn it on vibrate - it's not power-efficient. In fact, the Vibrate mode is a major power consuming feature.

AMOLED Black

Put a black background on your AMOLED screen - your phone uses less power displaying black. It sounds frugal, miser-cheap, but hey, its a few minutes on your battery. (MensXP.com)

Google Transit Maps Bus Routes for Chennai and Hyderabad

Google Transit Maps Bus Routes for Chennai and Hyderabad
Google has attacked the supremely uncool task of referring to a bus timetable. Just like the company did for Mumbai and Delhi, Google has added commuting in Hyderabad and Chennai to it's Google Maps' Transit feature. The feature, which provides detailed local bus transit services free of cost to users gives you access to bus routes online via Google Maps.

Google Transit Maps Bus Routes for Chennai and Hyderabad
To access the bus route information, enter your starting location, where you want to go, date, time of travel (normal Google Maps procedure), and Google will rustle up the usual schematics. But there'll be two options - one for private vehicles and one for public transport such as local rail and bus.
Click on the public transport, and you get precise details on bus routes, bus stops, bus numbers, their timings and a pretty good estimate on the time you'll need to get there.

Google Transit Maps Bus Routes for Chennai and Hyderabad
There's even advice on where buses start, and, answering the one question every seasoned bus commuter innately knows, frequency of services.
"The addition of local bus services in Hyderabad to Google India Transit will help millions of commuters and visitors in the city to explore public transportation options as they search for directions or locations, and encourage alternatives to driving," Kapil Goswami from Google India's business development said in a blogpost.
For this, Google mapped 446 APSRTC bus routes in Hyderabad.
"The entire data on Hyderabad's bus services, which are run by APSRTC, was collected and as we go along, we will keep adding various modes of transport like we did in Mumbai and Delhi where transit services of local trains and metro rail are also mapped along with bus services," the spokesperson explained.
While the service can't account for real time travel and rush hour, the service does let you access a too to indicate a change in landmarks.
Google began Transit information on Google maps for India mid-2010. Currently, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai and Ahmedabad have their public transport on it mapped on it. (MensXP.com)
